fairy tree, performance art

Out and about on my bike, I rode past the soccer team Melbourne Victory training on a public oval, with a small crowd of interested spectators. Then I went past the Fairy Tree (located within the Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne). It made me think about the opportunity for the creation of public art being a spectator sport. It was carved by Ola Cohn between 1931 and 1934. Did people gather around to watch?
