cold hard cash
The Age newspaper reports that the artwork Currency, 2011 sold for $17,500 (plus buyers commission and GST of $3850) at auction last night. The work, by artist Denis Beaubois, consists of 200 new $100 notes (ie. $20,000 worth), stacked and bound in two piles, and accompanied by a list of the notes' serial numbers. It was created with a $20,000 grant.
I think Denis should bring his idea into the public art realm. I remember thinking that a suitable response to a million dollar public artwork brief in Perth a couple of years back would be a pile of cash in a secure transparent box. I suspect a million dollars would attract more public attention than most artwork. Throw in some staged heist pranks and the media of the world would be all over it.
