Mildura was home to the Mildura Sculpture Triennial (originally the Mildara Prize for Sculpture) from 1961 to 1988 . Far from being an event staged for tourists in a conservative backwater, the event had a very contemporary focus and is listed with pride on the CVs of many of the leading public artists of the period.

A legagcy of acquired works remain around the city, mostly robust steel works that stand the test of time in public space (eg. the work from the 1982 event by Peter Blizzard pictured below). But looking back at photos of the period (eg. from 1978), it's clear that the reputation of the event was more likely grounded in less permanent and experimental work.
